Find out what they want to cover in the essays you're giving. The last thing you want is to make them think that their topic is just too difficult and they'll end up writing something that will be rejected by their local college and they'll end up dropping out of the program. So how do you find out what your students want to write? It's easy. Just ask them. After you've taught middle school for a while, you'll realize that students will be more than happy to tell you what they want. They may not always want you to know it, but they will tell you if they're not happy with something. You'll have to ask them if they want to talk about their topic in your class. What do you need to do now is go and take a look at a few of their projects and see if they have a good sense of what the topic should be. If they do, then this is a great thing. You can check the project and give your students feedback on what they're doing well. Now, if you're teaching middle school and you're not familiar with what comparative essays are, it's going to be a little bit harder.
